[origin: DE102004057680A1] The method involves generating a temporally changing magnetic field by a coil (3) of a flow rate sensor, where the coil serves as a magnetic field generator. The sensor function is monitored based on a receive signal induced by the field in another coil (5) serving as the receiver. The induced voltage is proportional to a cross section of a measuring tube via which medium whose flow rate is to be measured flows. An independent claim is also included for a magnetically inductive flow rate sensor.
