The light sourceÄ20, 30, 40Ü includes a plurality of LEDsÄ21-23, 31-33Ü mounted on a reflecting base. Each of the LEDsÄ21-23, 31-33Ü generates light that leaves that LEDÄ21-23, 31-33Ü via a top surface, a bottom surface, and one or more side surfaces of the LEDÄ21-23, 31-33Ü. The reflecting base has a reflective surface in contact with the bottom surface of each of the LEDsÄ21-23, 31-33Ü. Light leaving the side surfaces of the LEDsÄ21-23, 31-33Ü is reflected into the acceptance angle of the optical systemÄ29Ü by a plurality of reflectorsÄ36, 46, 91Ü. In one embodiment of the invention, the reflectorsÄ36, 46, 91Ü include a plurality of reflecting facets for reflecting light leaving the side surfaces of the LEDsÄ21-23, 31-33Ü. The facets may be part of the reflective baseÄ24, 34Ü or separate objects located between the LEDsÄ21-23, 31-33Ü.
