[origin: EP1839858A2] The unit has a longitudinal folding unit or a magazine assembly with a cutting device arranged on the former longitudinal folding unit or a magazine assembly. The cutting blade cylinder (14) and notching cylinder (15) of the cutting unit (13) for guaranteeing format variability are driven such that the circumferential speed of blade cylinder and notching cylinder corresponds to the speed of the substrate to be printed during the cutting process. The blade cylinder and notching cylinder are accelerated and decelerated before and after the cutting process. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a folding unit of a printing machine.
