[origin: WO2006035393A2] The invention relates a binary phase structure for generating a periodical light signal having high pitch/width ratios. The binary phase structure comprises an array of adjacent unit cells, each unit cell being defined by a height profile having either height h1 or height h2. The height profile is derived from a two-dimensional formula giving an angle either equal to 0 (modulo 2p) or to p, depending on the spatial position in the unit cell. Use: Generation of a periodical light signal.
