Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2422657A] An eutectic assembly 10 (cold pack) has a housing 12 containing a coolant and a thermo-chromic transition material. The housing may me made from a polymer, such as a thermosetting resin, for example, polypropylene, polyurethane, PVC, polyester, etc. The cold pack may be formed by moulding, and the thermochromic material may be mixed with the polymer. Alternatively, the thermochromic material may be applied to the housing by printing or painting, or included within the coolant. The housing may include an aperture 14 through which the coolant is introduced, and the aperture may include a closure such as a screw cap. The housing may be shaped such that it is able to absorb heat in an efficient manner, and thus the housing may be a flat container with a large surface area to volume ratio. The outer surface of the housing may be provided with several apertures 16 that increase the surface area available for cooling, and also provide means for lifting. The coolant may be a phase change material, such as water and/or organic liquids. The thermochromic material may provide visual indication of the eutectic plate temperature. The cold pack may be used within an insulated container which contains a food product, a beverage, a cosmetic product or a pharmaceutical product.
