[origin: WO2006103237A1] The invention relates to a device and a method for differentiating between a person (6) sitting on the seat surface (2) of a vehicle seat (1) and an object (4), especially a child seat. Said device comprises a cushion (3) provided with weight sensors (S<SUB>R</SUB>, S<SUB>M</SUB>) which are distributed over the seat surface (2) in a plane manner, first weight sensors (S<SUB>M</SUB>) being arranged in a central region (M) and second weight sensors (S<SUB>R</SUB>) being arranged on the edge of the seat surface (2). At least one central weight sensor (S<SUB>M</SUB>) is differentiated from a plurality of second weight sensors on the edge of the seat surface in that it always emits a comparatively low sensor signal when subjected to the same weight load.
