[origin: EP1876118A2] The device (2) has a conveying device (4) for transporting letters to a separation device. A holding device (12) holds a letter box (14) at the conveying device, where the letter box is open upwards. A swiveling unit (16) swivels the letter box towards the conveying device. The swiveling unit is activated along the conveying device at different locations, and a vibration unit vibrates the swiveled letter box. An independent claim is also included for a method for separation of letters arranged in a stack.
