[origin: EP1876255A1] The invention relates to a carburized or carbonitrided steel and process of manufacturing parts from this steel, contemplating adding vanadium in amounts of less than 0.15% by weight in a carburized or carbonitrided steel. This addition together with a specific composition of the remaining elements aids in increasing the hardenability of the steel and in minimizing deformations when an area of the surface of a part for the manufacture of which said steel has been selected is subjected to a hardening treatment by carburizing or carbonitriding followed by quenching in a non-severe medium.
