[origin: WO2006117446A1] The invention relates to a self-disengaging embodiment for a fan (109) in an electromagnetic retarder. Said retarder comprises a rotating shaft (102), a rotor (101) rotationally fixed to the rotating shaft (102), induction coils (107), arranged in a crown on the rotor (101), a generator with a rotor (106) mounted on one end of the rotating shaft (102) and supplying the induction coils (107) and a fan (109) to circulate a cooling gas around the induction coils (107). The fan (109) is fitted to freely rotate about the rotating shaft (102) and is provided with means (112) forming an armature which may be exposed to an electromagnetic field created by the induction coils (107) and causing the fan (109) to rotate.
