[origin: EP1881186A2] The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (10) having several cylinders (i) which move a crank shaft (16). A signal provides a state of the engine in which no combustion takes place, a signal for the compression in the respective cylinders (i) and characteristic size (qi, j) detected. The size is dependent on the state of the engine and is determined so that no compression power acts on the engine.
