[origin: EP1881258A1] The lighting unit has a non glowing light source (21) comprising illuminating diode and has an optical light distribution body downstream to the light source. The distribution body is a part of the illuminating diode. The section of the distribution body adjacent to the light source has an elliptical section as envelope in a section plane, which has the optical axis. A semi-major axis (36) of the ellipse is arranged in the zero degree direction shifted from the light source and that the radius of the osculation circle of the semi-major axis averages between 30 percent and 90 percent.
