[origin: EP1882667A1] In an elevator apparatus, a shock absorber for absorbing a shock of a collision of an ascending/descending body with a lower portion of a hoistway, is mounted on a lower portion of the ascending/descending body to be raised and lowered within the hoistway. The shock absorber has a part, which is equal to or longer than a stroke length thereof, protruding downward from a lower end of the ascending/descending body, and the remaining part of the shock absorber is disposed within a range of a vertical dimension of the ascending/descending body.
