[origin: EP1884362A2] A printing unit of a printing press has impression and blanket cylinders (5,4) that transfer the transfer layer to a printing sheet (6) and a material applicator (7), such as a bush, that applies a fluid or powder friction-reducing material to the cylinders and the reverse side of the carrier foil. A transfer foil (1) is moved together with the sheet along a transport path to the cylinders. The material applicator is located in a region at the transport path of the transfer foil and is positioned upstream of the cylinders in a transport direction. Independent claims are included for (1) method of transferring a transfer layer from the front surface of a carrier foil to a printing material; (2) transfer foil.
