The web (2) passes through the penultimate press nip (16), at the last of the three nips, with pressure on one side against a smooth surface and through a final free-standing press nip (17) with pressure on the other side against a smooth surface. The smooth surfaces are formed by rollers with smooth mantles and/or smooth blankets.
