[origin: EP1731911A1] Selectively amplifying the oligomerization of an isoform of cellular prion protein (I) comprising contacting (I) with a cyclic hydrocarbon compound (II) or its salts, solvates, isomers or derivatives, is new. Selectively amplifying the oligomerization of an isoform of cellular prion protein (I) comprises contacting (I) with a cyclic hydrocarbon compound of formula (II) or its salts, solvates, isomers or derivatives. A : C(H) xR 1, CO, C(H) xOR 1, C(H) xSR 1 or CNR 1R 2; x : 0-1; R 1, R 2H or 1-6C alkyl (optionally substituted); R : H, OR 1, N(R 1)(R 2), SR 1 or 1-10C hydrocarbon (optionally interrupted by S, O or N, or optionally substituted); and n : 0-3. The dotted ring means that the pyrimidyl can be optionally saturated or aromatic ring. Independent claims are included for: (1) detecting the presence or risk of encephalopathy comprising contacting a biological sample with (II) under the amplification condition of (I), and optionally detecting the presence of (I) that indicates the risk or the presence of encephalopathy; (2) a kit for the selective amplification of the oligomerization of (I) comprising a reagent having (II); a kit for the diagnosis of encephalopathies, particularly for transmissible subacute spongiform encephalopathies in animal or human comprising a reagent having (II); and (3) a kit comprising an antibody or a mixture of antibodies for detecting (I).
