[origin: WO2006136397A1] The invention relates to a method for antimicrobial finishing of a polymer, in which (a) an organophilic sheet silicate which contains antimicrobially effective onium ions is produced, wherein a starting sheet silicate is loaded with onium ions preferably to a measure beyond the cation exchange capacity of the starting sheet silicate, (b) the organophilic sheet silicate is mixed with the polymer and (c) the polymer is preferably not provided with antimicrobial effective metals or metal compounds. An antimicrobial plastic additive and an antimicrobial polymer composition are also disclosed.
