In order to improve the hygiene conditions at the milking station, the present invention proposes assigning associated means (16) for removing contaminants stuck to the floor to the floor of the accommodating area (2). According to the inventive method, the surface of the milking area is wetted by means which are integrated in the region of the floor of the milking area before an animal is milked, and dirt is washed away from the floor of the milking area after milking.
