[origin: WO2007014860A1] A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine (1), in particular, in a non-firing condition, are disclosed which permit an essentially smooth switch between two operating conditions for the internal combustion engine (1) with differing numbers of operating cylinders (11, 12, ..., 18) with regard to charge exchange. Air is introduced into the internal combustion engine through a control element (5) in an air inlet (10) and the amount of air introduced into the internal combustion engine (1) controlled by the position of the control element (5). A charge exchange condition for at least one cylinder (11, 12, ..., 18) of the internal combustion engine (1) is altered. On altering the charge exchange condition of the at least one cylinder (11, 12, ..., 18) the setting of the control element (5) in the air inlet (10) is altered.
