[origin: WO2006090091A1] A user of a computer having a USB interface can be authenticated by providing a security device. The security device is attached to the USB interface via a USB adapter. A boot program is initiated on the computer. The boot program supports USB communications with a first device type. Communications are performed between the boot program and the security device to authenticate the user via the USB adapter. The USB adapter emulates the first device type to the boot program to perform the communications.
