[origin: DE202005013753U1] The ballast has a measuring device (M) to repeatedly measure a parameter e.g. voltage and heating resistance, that are correlated to the temperature of electrodes (E1, E2) of a discharge lamp (LA) during a preheating operation of the electrodes. A control device (C) ignites the discharging of the lamp in a non-repetitive process for the parameter that is correlated to the temperature during the measurement.
