Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2430487A] An apparatus for providing an optical effect which resembles flames comprises: a housing (12), a light source (32) mounted in the housing; one or both of (a) a viewing screen (14) in which an optical effect may be observed and light modifying means (24) arranged behind the viewing screen in the path of light from the light source to the viewing screen, and (b) a viewing bed (18) observable by a user from the front of the housing; at least one at least partially light transmitting member (34, Fig 3) having optically differentiated regions, said member being disposed in the path of light from the light source (32) respectively to said light modifying means (24) and/or said viewing bed (18) and means for moving said light transmitting member with respect to the light source. The at least one at least partially light transmitting member (34, Fig 3) having optically differentiated regions is preferably a disc (36, Fig 3) having differently coloured regions. The light modifying means (24) preferably comprises a rear reflector (26) and a plurality of strips (28a, Fig 3) of material having reflective qualities, such as silk. Control means (44) may be inclined to control the speed of rotation of the disc(s).
