[origin: WO2007048504A1] The invention relates to an apparatus for operating a motor vehicle, having a driver-request detection means (1) for a prespecified value (PW) for a setpoint driving speed (v_soll), a braking device (2) with brake-pressure detection means, a driving-speed detection means (4) for an actual driving speed (v_ist) and a control unit (5), and also to a method for this purpose. The object of the invention is to prevent impaired operation of a motor vehicle. According to the invention, the object is achieved in that a safety reaction of the control unit (5) can be triggered when the detected actual driving speed (v_ist) falls below a defined standstill limit value (z) and the prespecified value (PW) and the brake pressure (p) at the same time each exceed a limit value (y, x) which is assigned to them.
