[origin: WO2007051699A1] The invention concerns devices for measuring the speed of a vehicle relative to the ground, particularly the speed of a motor vehicle. A lighting source lights the ground; a matrix electronic image sensor organized in a matrix consisting of multiple lines (Li to LN) and columns (Ci to CM) of pixels, monitors a ground area. The sensor comprises, on the one hand, a matrix of N lines of M pixels oriented perpendicular to the forward direction of the vehicle and, on the other, a reference line of P pixels (P being less than M) parallel to the lines of the matrix; firstly, an instantaneous image projected on the reference line is recorded; afterward, an image projected on the matrix is recorded. The device comprises means for correlating the image projected on the P pixels of the reference line with the images projection on all the possible groups of P pixels in each of the N lines. The position of the groups that gives the best correlation of instantaneous images represents a measure of a longitudinal component and a transversal component of speeds.
