[origin: DE102005055682A1] The device (10) has a sensor arrangement (30) with a light source for producing light of a wavelength that is utilized to illuminate banknotes (21) to be tested. A set of marking substances is provided at the banknotes for producing light of another wavelength that is collected by the arrangement. A control device (35) analyzes the data of the arrangement by the light of the latter wavelength and compares with reference data to determine authenticity of the banknotes. The design and operation of the arrangement and/or the control device enables complicated interference at the substance.
