[origin: WO2007060000A2] The invention relates to a device and a method for carefully settling a patient in a defined position. The aim of the invention is to provide a device for settling patients, which enables the patient to be both carefully settled and also maintained in a defined position. The inventive device comprises a mattress having a surface which becomes flexible as a result of the application of a first control signal, and rigid as a result of the application of a second control signal; a cushion which is filled with a fluid, is arranged on the mattress, and has a flexible wall in the region where the patient or a body part of the patient is lying on the cushion; and a fluid pump which is connected to the fluid in the cushion by means of a valve and can be used to adjust the inner pressure and/or inner volume of the cushion to a pre-determined value.
