[origin: WO2007060079A1] An apparatus and a method for actuation of personal protection means are proposed, with an acceleration sensor system, which is sensitive in the vehicle longitudinal direction, producing a first signal, and with a second acceleration sensor system, which is sensitive in the vehicle lateral direction, producing a second signal. Furthermore, an evaluation circuit is provided, which actuates the personal protection means as a function of the first and second signals, with the actuation switch (?C) determining at least one measure of oscillation energy, which occurs in the event of a crash, as a function of the second signal, and decides on actuation as a function of this measure.
