[origin: DE102005057156A1] Refrigerator appliance with a water supply (5) has isolating valves (25, 26) downstream of a chemically inert filter (4) for particulates removal. For poor quality water supplies the particulates filter may be replaced by an adsorption filter of similar cartridge housing style. The filtration medium may be a fine porosity ceramic, which can take-up particles throughout its volume, with less adverse effect on flowrate/ pressure loss than the same amount of fouling deposited only on an outer surface. The filter cartridges preferably have "push-buttons" located in positions which allow engaging sensors to identify filters as 'adsorbent' or 'particulates removal' types, and to accordingly set filter lifetime/ cumulative flow counter alarm devices for the correct replacement interval.
