[origin: WO2007068763A1] The invention relates to a method for coating the primary backing of a carpet (12) comprising a primary and a secondary backing (19, 11), e.g. in order to anchor pile knots (13) in the carpet fabric (18) during the production of the carpet fabric (18) in a tufting process, a plastic coating (15, 17) being applied to the rear side after hydrophobing the carpet fabric (18). In order to further improve a method of said type such that an improved soiling behavior is obtained for a carpet produced according to said method, a required amount of the plastic coating is forced into the supporting fabric of the carpet fabric (18) so as to form a waterproof layer.
