Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2433469A] The invention provides a security substrate (such as a paper) for use in a security document such as banknote, passport, or share certificate, and a method for its manufacture. Security is provided by the incorporation within a fibrous base substrate 10 of a fibrous tape 12 which includes at least one aperture 13 which is indistinct when the substrate is viewed by reflected light but is distinct when viewed in transmission. It is made indistinct by apparent blurring of the edges of the aperture(s) caused by deposition of fibres of the base substrate in region 14 (overlap area) around the perimeter of perforation 13 during the manufacturing/tape incorporation process. The manufacturing method may include a cylinder mould process to form the base substrate or the tape. The tape may be wholly embedded in the base substrate or partially embedded, with a surface exposed. The tape and/or base substrate may include additional security features.
