[origin: WO2007080316A2] A belay device for a rope (11) comprises a metal body (12) with at least one slot (13, 14) for the passage of a loop (21) of rope and a retention element in the form of a handle (17) integral with the body (12) without being articulated thereto and designed to control the relative movement of the distancing of the body with respect to a karabiner (20) traversing the loop (21). The device further includes elastic means arranged in order to bring the body (12) closer to the karabiner (20) when the rope (11) is immobilized and to automatically distance it therefrom when the rope is released. Applications: rope belay systems.
