[origin: EP1972753A1] A method for widening especially railway tunnels has a protective shield (6) positioned through the working area to enable a limited traffic on temporary rails while work progresses. The temporary tracks/carriageways are less than the original layout. The protective shield is moved as the work progresses, leaving the wider tunnel behind the work area. The temporary tracks also include access track for tunnel work. The widened tunnel is secured by cement spraying before fitting cladding panels.
