[origin: WO2007085325A1] The invention relates to a surge arrester, comprising at least one varistor block (1), two end fittings (3), a reinforcing element (9), holding the varistor block (1) under tension to the end fittings (3), and at least one anchor element (13) which holds the reinforcing element (9) in a through-hole (11) of at least one of the end fittings (3). The reinforcing element (13) is preferably a wedge which splits the reinforcing element (9) and braces it with the outer walls of the throughbore (11). Alternatively, two or more glass-fiber reinforced reinforcing elements are received in a through-hole (11) and a wedge between said reinforcing elements non-positively retains the reinforcing elements in the end fitting in the area of the through-hole (11).
