Preparation of a menthylamide compound of formula (I) comprises reacting a menthylhalide compound of formula (II) with magnesium or lithium and optionally elementary iodine or an alkylhalogenide, and subsequently either with an isocyanate compound (III) of formula (O=C=N-R 1>), or with a heterocyclic compound of formula (IV) or with a carbamoylchloride compound (V) of formula (Cl-CO-N(R 1>)(R 2>)).
