[origin: WO2007098825A1] The invention relates to a method for machining a material by means of a laser beam as well as an adequately designed device. The invention is characterized in that an image of at least some of the material is created, said image is evaluated in order to select at least one object (30, 42, 46) of the material therein, and the material is cut by irradiating the same with the laser beam so as to separate the selected object (30, 42, 46) from the material and/or transfer the selected object (30, 42, 46) from the material to a collecting device, the image being created and/or the material being cut with the aid of an optical lens (18). In order to render said method more accurate, the optical lens is automatically replaced in accordance with the accuracy required for evaluating the image or cutting the material. Particularly cutting lines (S) which are created by means of optical lenses magnifying in different manners and are thus provided with different cutting widths are created around the selected object (30, 42, 46).
