[origin: EP1990293A1] The device (1) has two belts that are arranged parallel to each other, where the belts are drivable in opposite direction. Space between the belts is larger than breadth of flat objects (11). A unit is provided for driving the belts. Another unit is provided for varying the space between the belts. The belt driving unit and the space varying unit are arranged on a base plate. A fixing facility is provided for contacting a holding device that is located at to-be-contacted flat objects. A unit (20) for evacuation of an isolated flat object is formed as a transportation belt. An independent claim is also included for a method for separating multiple vertically positioned flat objects under application of a device, which receives flat objects in a vertically standing position, and fixes and conveys the objects in a defined distance from each other.
