[origin: WO2007098902A1] A self-inflating protector, in particular umbrella, has an inflatable sheath (11) made of a flexible material. The interior of the sheath (11) is evacuated prior to use and a gaseous substance can be produced therein by means of a chemical reaction, the gaseous substance inflating the interior of the sheath (11). The chemical reaction may consist in soda granules being dissolved by citric acid. The citric acid may be accommodated in a container which is made to rupture by pressure being applied to the outside of the sheath (11) by a user, e.g. at a predetermined breaking point, or by being torn at a predetermined tearing point, the chemical reaction being triggered as a result. A self-inflating balloon can also be produced in this way.
