A distance piece (20) for a hanging patient rail system (1), wherein the distance piece (20) is disposed between the rail system (1) and the ceiling to which the rail system (1) is attached, to stabilise the position and orientation of the rail system (1) with respect to the ceiling, characterised in that: the distance piece (20) has a longitudinally compressible region (21) along its length, such that the length of the entire piece (20) can be controllably adjusted by means of a force acting along the longitudinal axis of the piece (20).
