[origin: WO2007115247A2] A hydraulic hybrid powertrain system (300) for use with an earth mover of the present invention comprises a power plant (310) generating a high pressure fluid at an output including a variable displacement pump (316) and automated throttle control (318); an energy storage system (322); and a drive system (326, 328). The power plant (310) includes an engine driving a hydraulic pump/motor (316) to generate the high pressure fluid. The hydraulic pump is preferably a variable displacement pump (316) and the system (300) includes an automated throttle control (318). Together these elements maintain the system fluid pressure. A cylinder (330) is provided within the drive system (314) for retarding the amount of the displacement within a displacement pump to maintain system pressure. The energy storage system (312) is an accumulator (322).
