[origin: WO2007121839A1] The invention relates to a diagnostic system in which the fault messages which have occurred are first of all collected and buffer-stored on-board using a short diagnostic test implemented in a control unit of the vehicle and are then transmitted to a memory area of the portable electronic driving authorization pass. The driving authorization pass thus always contains the result of a short diagnostic test which is carried out on-board. The result of this short diagnostic test is read from the memory of the driving authorization pass using a computer system during customer acceptance by a service garage and is processed using a more in-depth diagnostic algorithm which is built on the result of the short diagnostic test.
