[origin: WO2007121840A1] A dimmable electronic ballast for gas discharge lamps incorporates: - an electronic control unit (5), which is designed to selectively trigger the operation of a connected lamp according to at least the following operating modes: a.) above a defined dimming level, operation of the lamp with a high-frequency bipolar lamp current, and b.) below the defined dimming level, operation of the lamp with a unipolar DC lamp current, on which where appropriate a high-frequency current may be superimposed.
