According to the method, the main shaft (3) is connected to an output shaft (4) by means of a planetary gear set (17), the main shaft (3) being rotationally fixed to the sun gear (18) and the output shaft (4) being rotationally fixed to the planet gear carrier (20). The inventive method comprises the following steps: the rotational speed (n<SUB>Hohlrad</SUB>) of the ring gear (22) is detected, the rotational speed (n<SUB>Abtrieb</SUB>) of the output shaft or the planet gear carrier (20) is detected, and the rotational speed (n<SUB>Hauptwelle</SUB>) of the main shaft (3) is calculated from the rotational speed (n<SUB>Hohlrad</SUB>) of the ring gear and the rotational speed (n<SUB>Abtrieb</SUB>) of the output shaft or the planet gear carrier (20). The invention also relates to a transmission comprising a device for detecting rotational speed.
