[origin: EP2025598A1] The device (1) has a carrier (2) in which two gripping units (4, 6) are arranged in a longitudinal direction (L). The unit (4) includes a gripping element (12) moved in a direction of an outer circumference of a container (10). The unit (6) is inserted into a recess (10a) of the container. Another gripping element (17) of the unit (6) is moved towards an interior circumference of the container in order to grip the container from inside. The units are moved with respect to the carrier in the longitudinal direction of the carrier. An independent claim is also included for a method for gripping a container.
