An independent claim is included for a corresponding method for embossing a card in an embossing region (4), involving: (A) positioning an embossing matrix (7), which has individual actuatable embossing stampers and is movable in the X- and/or Y-direction, over the position to be embossed; (B) applying the actuatable, movable embossing stamper located in the matrix using a vertically movable punch and (C) impacting the punch, so that the card is embossed in teh embossing region by the stamper.
