[origin: WO2008006442A1] A rail construction machine for the spreading of ballast (2) on a rail (3) is provided with a machine frame that is movable on rails (14) and with a ballast plow (7) that is attached to this frame and has two rail covers (16) provided for covering of the rails (14). An ejection end (10) of a ballast conveyer belt (9) is arranged above the ballast plow (7). A ballast deflection device (17) is provided between the two rail covers (16) and underneath the ejection end (10), which ballast deflection device (17) extends in the longitudinal direction of the rail covers (16) and the rails (3), with the deflection device being able to be shifted by means of a drive (21) from a first position (23) to a working position (24). In the working position, the shifting width b of the ballast deflection device (17) that extends normal to the aforementioned longitudinal direction and parallel to the two rail covers (16) is at least three times as large as the width in the first position (23).
