An SO X trap catalyst (13) able to trap the SO X contained in the exhaust gas is arranged inside the engine exhaust passage upstream of the NO X storage catalyst (14). The vehicle drive power from the engine and the vehicle drive power from the electric motor (27) are adjusted so that the SO X trap rate of the SO X trap catalyst (13) is maintained at a predetermined high SO X trap rate.
