[origin: WO2008028581A1] The invention relates to a method for destroying banknotes, in which the banknotes are checked and sorted at at least one decentral location by means of at least one banknote processing machine, wherein non-circulatable banknotes are sorted out in order to be able to be transported to a central location for destruction, and, in the process, it is provided that all of the banknotes which are recognized as being non-circulatable are deposited on a single stack irrespective of the denomination detected during the checking and/or irrespective of the position of the banknotes, for which purpose use is made of a single output compartment of the banknote processing machine for all non-circulatable banknotes.
