A correcting variable is changed by a certain amount and the first value of a measurable variable is determined before the change and at least one second value after the change. An independent claim is also included for a device used for monitoring a fuel injection system. Preferred Features: The correcting variable influences the start of injection. The measurable variable is the speed or a variable concerning the moment produced by the internal combustion engine (100).
