[origin: EP1914329A1] In apparatus for increasing the operating life of a furnace, having gas supply element(s) (4) feeding in a gas containing fouling components (3), (i) the gas supply element has a coating layer (5) on which the fouling components are deposited on contact with the gas and (ii) the coating layer (together with the fouling components) is at least partially detached by the gas stream itself. Independent claims are included for: (1) a synthesis gas burning furnace incorporating the apparatus; and (2) a corresponding method for increasing the operating life of a furnace, involving (a) contacting the coated gas supplying element (4) with the gas so that the fouling components (3) are deposited on the coating layer (5) and (b) at least partially detaching the coating layer (together with the fouling components) with the gas stream itself.
