[origin: WO2008010074A2] The invention relates to a method for producing bulk material by foaming a bulk material under the effect of heat. The individual particles of the original bulk material are made of a material which thickens at an elevated temperature and in which a substance that turns into a gaseous state at an elevated temperature, e.g. crystal water or a foaming agent, is enclosed. In an earlier heating stage, the bulk material is heated to a temperature at which the bulk material remains solid while the substance that turns into a gaseous state at an elevated temperature is already outgassed. In a later heating stage, the temperature of the bulk material is increased to a point where the individual particles thicken. The bulk material is sifted between said two heating stages such that particles which do not have a predetermined minimum size are excluded from the later heating stage.
