[origin: WO2008052645A2] A method is provided for converting and for protecting a printing-material surface in a printing press by way of a radiation-curing or thermally drying varnish. In order to simplify the process, the varnish is applied to a plate (1) on a forme cylinder (13) and is subsequently dried or cured by a drying and/or curing device (5). The varnish film (2) which is produced in this way is transferred as a film in its entirety from the plate (1) onto the printing material in the press nip of a printing unit (D) or varnishing unit (L). The method is suitable for use in sheet-fed offset printing presses.
